Everyone remembers the demonstration from school... The teacher would get out a magnet, put a piece of paper on top, then pour some iron filings on the paper. A few careful shakes and - Voila! - the magnetic field outlines became visible!

The only problem was clean-up. If you got any of the filings in direct contact with the magnet, good luck trying to get them all off!
