The teacher would get out a magnet, put a piece of paper on top, then pour some iron filings on the paper. A few careful shakes and - Voila! - the magnetic field outlines became visible! Well now you can experiment with magnetic fields as well. With magnetic filings, a magnetic field can be viewed in 2 or 3 dimensions. Here is an exmple. Start by taking a rod magnet and place it on end. Then cut a piece of paper about 4 inches across. Next, carefully sprinkle filings on top of the paper and magnet. Eventually, the filing will align along the fields of force in both 2 and 3 dimensions as shown: When finished, simply pull opposite ends of the paper up, grab the magnet where it meets the paper and pull the magnet away and keep the filings for another day!
